Armenian Language Lesson 3: The Plural Form : In Armenian, forming the plural of nouns depends on the number of syllables and the ending of the noun. The most common endings are -եր (-er) and -ներ (-ner), but there are important rules and exceptions to know. This lesson explains the rules, provides examples, and highlights irregular forms.

1️⃣ Basic Rule: -եր vs -ներ

 

• Monosyllabic words (one-syllable nouns) usually take the ending -եր (-er).

• Polysyllabic words (more than one syllable) usually take -ներ (-ner).

Special case: Words ending in -ն that are polysyllabic double the « ն » in the plural.

Some monosyllabic words take -ներ (-ner) instead of -եր. These are usually words that in Grabar ended in -ն.

Examples:

  Another exception: ռուս → ռուսներ (rusner) → Russians

 

3️⃣ One-and-a-half-syllable words

 

• If the last syllable is accented, use -եր (-er).

• If the first syllable is accented, use -ներ (-ner).

Examples:

• աստղ → աստղեր (astgher) → stars

• գրիչ → գրիչներ (grichner) → pens

• սպա → սպաներ (spaner) → spas

• շտաբ → շտաբներ (shtabner) → headquarters

 

4️⃣ Irregular Plurals

Some common nouns have irregular plural forms:

• մարդ → մարդիկ (*mink’) → people / men

• կին → կանայք (*kanayk’) → women

• տիկին → տիկիններ / տիկնայք (tikinner / tiknayk) → ladies

• պարոն → պարոններ / պարոնայք (paronner / paronayk) → gentlemen

• անձ → անձեր / անձինք (ander / andzink) → individuals

 

5️⃣ Other Special Cases

 

• Nouns ending in -ացի (denoting origin or profession) sometimes form plurals with -ք (-k’) in colloquial speech:

  • գյուղացի → գյուղացիք (gyughats’k’) → villagers

  • Երևանցի → երևանցիք (Yerevants’k’) → people from Yerevan

• Modern literary Armenian prefers -ներ (-ner) endings:

  • գյուղացիներ, երևանցիներ, վրացիներ

• Sometimes the last vowel changes in the plural:

  • գիրք → գրքեր (girk’er) → books

  • շուն → շներ (shner) → dogs
