Armenian Language Lesson 4: Personal Pronouns

Pronouns are words that replace nouns to avoid repetition and make sentences clearer.

In Armenian, there are 8 main types of pronouns :

Type Description Example (English / Armenian)
Personal pronouns Refer to people or things doing the action I, you, he, she, we, you, they / Ես, դու, նա, մենք, դուք, նրանք
Demonstrative pronouns Point to someone or something this, that, these, those, etc. / սա, այն, այս, այնքան և այլն
Reciprocal pronouns Show mutual action between two or more subjects each other, one another / միմյանց, իրար
Indefinite pronouns Refer to an unknown or non-specific person/thing someone, something, anyone, anything / ինչ-որ մեկը, ինչ-որ բան
Definite pronouns Refer to a specific person/thing already known all, every, etc. / Ամբողջ, ամեն և այլն
Relative pronouns Connect clauses or refer to a noun mentioned before who, which, that / ով, որը
Interrogative pronouns Ask questions who?, what?, which? / ով?, ինչ?, որը?
Negative pronouns Express negation nobody, nothing, none / ոչ ոք, ոչինչ, ոչ մեկը

Personal subject pronouns replace the subject of a sentence — the person or thing doing the action.

3. Examples in sentences

Նա աշխատում է He/She is working
Մենք գնում ենք դպրոց We are going to school
Դուք շատ լավ եք You (plural) are very good
Նրանք գիրք կարդում են They are reading a book

 

 

4. Tips for learners

  • In Armenian, pronouns are often used, but sometimes the verb ending already shows the subject, so the pronoun can be omitted.

  • Practice pronouncing each pronoun with the example sentences to memorize both the word and the pronunciation.
