What Does A1 French Mean?

A1 is the first main proficiency level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The framework organizes language proficiency into six principal levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

At A1, learners have a very basic range of simple expressions related to personal information and concrete everyday needs. They can begin understanding familiar expressions, simple questions and short instructions when communication is clear and appropriately paced.

You can read the official level descriptions on the Council of Europe CEFR website.

Did you know?

French is now spoken by around 396 million people worldwide. France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reported in 2026 that French had become the world’s fourth most spoken language. It also reported around 170 million learners of and in French worldwide.

How to Learn A1 French Vocabulary Effectively

Trying to memorize hundreds of words in one sitting is rarely an effective strategy. Instead, divide vocabulary into small groups and review them regularly. A learner might study ten new words in the morning, test them later in the day and return to the same vocabulary several days later.

Context also matters. Rather than memorizing pomme = apple alone, create a short sentence such as Je mange une pomme. Connecting vocabulary with a meaningful sentence makes the word easier to recognize when you encounter it again.

💡 Sonleil learning tip:

Choose 10 words from one table. Read them aloud, hide the English column and try to remember each meaning. Next, create one simple French sentence with every word. Review the same vocabulary tomorrow before learning a new group.

Learn Words Through Complete French Phrases

Individual vocabulary gives you the building blocks of French, while complete phrases show you how those blocks work together. Once you recognize basic nouns and verbs, begin combining them into short everyday expressions.

For more practice, continue with our 100 Easy French Phrases for Beginners . You will find practical expressions for greetings, questions and common situations.

French Vocabulary and the CEFR

The CEFR does not simply define language ability by asking learners to memorize a fixed number of isolated words. Its descriptors focus on what learners can actually do with a language. At A1, this includes a basic repertoire of simple expressions connected with personal details and concrete needs.

Language-specific Reference Level Descriptions can provide more detailed content specifications, including vocabulary and grammar associated with CEFR competences. The Council of Europe explains Reference Level Descriptions here.

Why Learn French Today?

French reaches far beyond France. The language is used across Europe, Africa, North America and many other parts of the world. Current figures published by France Diplomatie report hundreds of millions of French speakers and a large global community of learners.

If you are curious about its international reach, read our Number of French Speakers in 2026 guide for additional information about the global Francophone community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should an A1 French learner know?

An A1 learner should develop a basic repertoire for everyday situations. Useful areas include introductions, numbers, family, food, time, shopping, transportation, basic verbs and simple questions.

Is learning 500 French words enough?

Five hundred useful words can create a valuable foundation, but vocabulary size alone does not determine your CEFR level. Listening, speaking, reading, writing and the ability to use words in context are also important.

How many French words should I learn per day?

There is no universal number that works for every learner. A manageable daily target combined with regular review is usually more useful than trying to memorize a large list once. Ten words per day, for example, would allow you to work through this entire guide in 50 study days.

Should beginners learn French words or sentences?

Both are useful. Individual words help expand your vocabulary, whereas short sentences teach you how vocabulary works with grammar. Combining the two approaches is particularly practical for beginners.

Final Thoughts

Building a useful French vocabulary takes time, but you do not need thousands of advanced expressions before you start communicating. Begin with everyday words, review them frequently and place them inside simple sentences.

After working through these categories, try using the vocabulary in short conversations, listening exercises and written sentences. Moving from recognition to active use is an important part of becoming more comfortable with French.
